Raffia is a natural fiber extracted from a type of palm tree found in Africa and which is worked in Madagascar in an exceptional way. The know-how of Malagasy craftsmen passed down from generation to generation gives rise to an endless number of ways of weaving raffia that are applied to various products, including bags and hats. A bag usually takes between 2 and 5 days to weave depending on its difficulty, so it is not an industrial process but a purely handmade one. Craftsmen and craftswomen can meet and weave together or weave from their homes, which makes it easier for many women to reconcile family life and help support their families.
