Raffia is a natural fibre extracted from a type of palm tree found in Africa and which is exceptionally well worked in Madagascar. The know-how of Malagasy craftsmen, passed down from generation to generation, has given rise to a myriad of ways of weaving raffia that are applied to various products, including bags and hats. A bag usually takes between 2 and 5 days to weave depending on its difficulty, so it is not an industrial process but a purely artisanal one. Artisans can meet and weave together or weave from their homes, which makes it easier for many women to reconcile family life and help support their families.
